Luxury Awaits In This Mediterranean Lake-Side Home

Mediterranean architecture has a unique look of its own — stucco exterior, red tile roof and traces of travertine throughout. There’s something alluring about this style that prompts intrigue beyond curb-appeal. It draws you into the feeling of another era, and if you’re lucky enough to have an invitation to visit, you’ll see that the interior of this home will transport you back to the future.

Inside, the details are contemporary in contrast to the façade, right down to the linear fireplaces and elegant Hubbardton Forge Lighting. Modern decor is what differentiates this three-level Mediterranean Lake Norman home … that and a pink bedroom fit for a princess! Let’s take a look inside…
Mediterranean architecture has a unique look of its own – square lines, stucco exterior, red tile roof and traces of travertine throughout. There’s something mysterious about this style that prompts intrigue beyond curb-appeal.

Don’t be fooled by the Mediterranean exterior — what awaits inside is a fresh, contemporary vibe that sweeps you off your feet, from the curved grand staircase to the floor-to-ceiling windows.

This unique, transitional metal and glass door with a half-round top is by Clark Hall.

From the moment you walk into the 8,000-square-foot home, the contemporary vibe sweeps you off your feet, straight to the water’s edge. The welcoming lake view is a signature feature of all Patrick Joseph Distinctive Homes (PJDH).
“There’s a Miami Beach feel to this custom home,” says Jim Shalvoy, VP of PJDH, a Cornelius, NC-based firm. “With three levels (no basement), there was a lot of opportunity to make the long-range water views a feature in every room.”
Lakeside, the saltwater pool is fitting with the home’s architecture and adds another water element from an interior view. The travertine pool deck is complemented by emerald-green turf, punctuated with limestones in a linear pattern, completely in-step with the contemporary feel.

You can see just how many windows this home has — views, views and more views! And let’s talk about that pool …

We love the wrought iron railings on this catwalk with Azure blue ceiling to complement the lake palette. There is really no bad view anywhere in this home.

Living Kitchen

As kitchens become an extension of the living space, these typically high-functioning rooms take on a feel of luxe design for entertaining instead. That means making room for the moving parts of a functioning kitchen, into another room entirely. Move over, butler’s pantry. There’s a new workhorse on the scene!

“The scullery is a small working kitchen complete with sink, disposal, dishwasher, wine chiller and an extra refrigerator,” says Jim, who, in partnership with architect J.J. Barga of Elite Design Group, designs sculleries into most homes they build today. “People don’t want their coffee maker and toaster sitting out, and when they’re entertaining, they want the mess somewhere else.”

All of this plus cabinet storage for dishes and glassware and a wine chiller make the prep-work of entertaining easy and out of the way. There’s even refrigeration drawers down low stocked with juice boxes and snacks for the children.
The addition of a scullery grants permission for this kitchen to be the beautiful living space it was designed to be. The Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are simply part of the art. The extraordinary mixed-media stone backsplash made of Calcutta marble with bronze and mosaic mirror is a focal point that makes this space sizzle.

“The coffered ceiling warms the space, adding a traditional accent,” says Jim. “Extra living space, with comfortable, sectional seating, a linear fireplace and flat screen TV was incorporated to provide casual seating space.”

The key to a useful kitchen? Plenty of space, tons of storage and lots of countertop! The mixed-media backsplash is from ADKO.

Every home needs a wine chiller like this one, don’t you think?

Atypical Jack and Jill Bedrooms

We traditionally know the term “Jack and Jill” as two bedrooms that share a bathroom. In this home, the children’s rooms each have their own separate suites and instead share an expansive covered patio with an infinity edge feel.

“It appears that you are suspended, with no obstruction, when you are on the upper patio,” Jim shares. “The frameless glass rail slides into a narrow channel that aligns with the architecture of the house, so all you see is water.”

On one side of the covered patio is a pretty pink bedroom, with a curved window seat overlooking the lake. Wide plank oak floors anchor the space, bringing a rich warmth to the blue backdrop of the water. The “Jack” to this “Jill” is a warm welcoming space for a boy.
Meanwhile, in the master bathroom, the tone is set for year-round spa days. Grey Carrara marble with accent tiles on the shower border add interest and contrast throughout. The herringbone pattern on the floor adds a design element down low to the expansive space, along with basket weave tile accents on the built-in soaking tub.

“The shower with frameless glass is set-up for steam and equipped with a rain head and handheld options as well as wall mounted shower heads,” says Jim.

Smart Use of Space

Sacrificing storage to capitalize on the views, the would-be unfinished attic space was designed as a “crow’s nest” instead. This room functions as a home office and recreational room. “The homeowners opted to finish the space to use as a home office and rec room, complete with wet bar and bathroom,” Jim shares. “The curved glass creates a unique dimension in the room.”

But when it comes to good use of space and recreational fun beyond watersports, the garage is up-fitted for fun. With 10-foot ceilings and two hoops, it’s the perfect court for basketball practice.
